a moment in time

Hmmmm…I just found some old noodlings
I wrote this piece on June 15th 2009.
It’s weird reading my thoughts from ago…
Funnily, it was a rare…very rare time in my life when I DIDN’T have a job.
I had quit a six figure a year management position because I absolutely dreaded going to work 6 or seven days a week, at THAT place, a hospital.
Surrounded by illness, suffering and pain.
It made me ill.
I had sufficient savings to see me through. That is…until I found another J.O.B.
My thoughts back then…
I haven’t had this much time off work since…..oh, gosh since the summer hols of 1982 and as stressful as not having any income has been, it’s been simply wonderful not having a job.
Clocking in, routine, chasing one’s tail, phones ringing, quick bite for lunch, when will this meeting be over, more routine, sleepy eyes in the afternoon, only one hour and 10 minutes until it’s over, last minute bullshit, clocking out……
Ahhhhh, another day in the workaday world is over, time to jump off the mad hamster wheel and unwind, relax, enjoy the rest of the day….. Rest of the day???
But sods law says we have to work 8, 10, 12 hours plus a day at any job…..where the heck is this awful rule carved in stone???? Who says that we have to spend so much of our precious time each day in a place we probably wouldn’t be at if we really had a choice, around people we probably wouldn’t choose to be around if we had a choice and doing mundane tasks that we probably wouldn’t do if we had a choice…
Of course, there are always exceptions…you know, that one great shining star that pops in to the office and brightens up your day, that one super exciting, challenging project that sets your tired, old grey matter on fire….
But lets face it….most of the time spent at work is…well, work…. And a lot of work…8, 10, 12 hours of work every day…5 days a week! Just how focused and on the ball are we all towards the end of the working day…towards the end of the shift??? Prone to more mistakes? Fried concentration? Tired bodies? When you figure in time to get ready for work, getting to work, coming home from work, you aren’t left with a whole lot of time at the end of the day for yourself…or your loved one…or your family… Is it any wonder we are so stressed, so dog tired at the end of the day, so burnt out…
I seem pretty content back then.
That makes me feel good.
Just a thought…
