my honky tonk hero…

Vernon & I spend a lot of time in the library these days.

And I must say Nashville has an absolutely wonderful collection of branch libraries and of course, the main one.

Having spent the summer on the streets, I very quickly learned that the library is THE best place to hang out during the long hot summer days. Air conditioning, ice-cold water, comfy chairs, nice facilities and of course, books…

But, hang on a minute…who reads a book these days? Unfortunately, not too many and in my mind not enough and it’s a crying,  albeit unavoidable, shame that computers & the internet have encroached on the written word.

Vernon & I watched ‘The Book of Eli” recently and if you are in any way familiar with this indisputable, top-notch movie-of all movies of all time (!) then you will understand where I am going with this and how in the future, a post apocalyptic one at that, books are going to be, dare I say it, the bomb! The written word will be revered and books will again be a hot commodity.

Anyway, back to the library…

We come primarily to use the public computers. They are awesome!!!! You reserve a time, usually lasting one hour and you may have to wait in line for approximately 15-12 minutes but it is so worth the wait…

Having been without a laptop, and network connection for wayyy too long now, I am literally chomping at the bit come 09:00 & when the doors open up…

But, I have to tell you, trying to write, edit, proof read & publish a blog all under the watchful eye of a ticking clock, is pretty darn stressful, more so than I would have ever imagined…

But I have done it! Quite a few times! And now I challenge myself to complete it all within the one hour…

I’m still working on that and it sure is a killer when you are just-quite-almost finished, and arghhhhh….the computer shuts down and then the library closes for the DAY! That is just plain wrong…you have to sit on it, sleep on it…burn with it until the next day.

And then there’s that crazy rule regarding being quiet, which is so freakin’ hard to do when my man, Vernon Rust records an utterly fantastic song, a message that he has carried in his head for years.

“We need a lot more Jesus,

and a lot less of everything else”

Now, you know that this is going to be a huge, massive SMASH hit.

And, we are going to do so much good with it…

We are going to play it to the world,

Spread the word…

And you expect us to ‘HUSH’…

‘Er, please remember you’re in the library’…

How on earth could we?

The song was emailed to us and you had better believe it when I say we had to listen to it at least 500 times (and that’s each of us)! And we are a one set of headphones family too…

Throw in all the excitement of telling everyone and gearing up for the release, Vernon & I are hardly flavor of the month at the library…

And, while waiting for a time slot on the computer and as I browsed the, soon-to-be-extinct, books on the shelves, I found a copy of ‘Honky Tonk Hero’ by Billy Joe Shaver…

And, thought to myself,

if anyone is a Honky Tonk Hero….

In my mind,

it’s Vernon Rust
